Getting your video to the top of the search engines can really give the traffic to it a boost. Video stands out in the search results, and can get a high clickthrough rate, even if it isn’t in the number one position. Let’s look at three steps you can take to make your video dominate the search results for your chosen keywords.

1. Choose the Right Keywords

The first step is to choose the right keywords to target. You want to find something that has a decent amount of search volume, but not too many competing pages – just like any other web page you create. Another important part of choosing the right keywords is identifying ones that have other videos that are already ranking. This also gives you a target to research, to figure out how much work it’s going to take to get your video ranking in place of the current one. If you find a video in the results for a potential keyword, do some competitive analysis on it.

- See how it is optimized for keywords in the title, description, etc.

- How many views and/or comments does it have?

- Run a backlink analysis to see how many backlinks it has, and from what type of sites (and what Pagerank those pages have).

This can be done with tools such as Backlink Watch or the SEO Quake plugin for Firefox. If you find that the videos which are currently ranking are going to be hard to bump out with your own, move onto the next keyword and keep looking for the low-hanging fruit.

2. Backlinking

You don’t have much control over the on-page SEO factors for your videos so it’s critical that you get backlinks pointing to it – with keyword-focused anchor text – if you want to drive your videos up the rankings.

You can use all the same methods you would use to get backlinks to any other page:

- Blog commenting
- Article marketing
- Social bookmarking
- Backlink services / blog networks
- etc.

One thing that you do have a little more flexibility with for your videos is the number of links you build, and how quickly. Sites like YouTube.com already have so many links pointing to them that another few hundred isn’t going to raise any red flags with the search engines the way it might for your own site. This gives you more opportunity to use services like Unique Article Wizard or any other submission service that can generate dozens or even hundreds of links in a short period of time.

3. RSS Submission and Syndication

Virtually all of the video sharing sites will automatically generate RSS feeds for your videos. You can take these feeds and submit them to the various RSS aggregators, either manually or with software like RSS Submit or RSSBot. This has two advantages.

First, each of those aggregators will wind up with links pointing back to your video, increasing the number of backlinks. And second, your feed may be picked up by other marketers who are using market-related feeds to generate content on their own sites. This will also create more links pointing back to your videos.

Making your video dominate the search results for your keyword phrase is going to take a bit of work, but it’s not complicated. And once you see the resulting traffic, you’ll be glad you put in that little extra bit of effort.

You are right. Since very few people (relatively speaking) do videos, it responds to backlinking quickly and easily. While I myself haven’t done much of videos, I have seen that just a handful of links can send a video onto first page for moderately competitive keywords.
