Facebook is now a dominating power in the world of social media. Facebook has created a new model that could be set to rock the search engine industry, in particular the Super Google, who has dominated the search space for many years now. Due to the high volume of traffic Facebook is receiving. It seems to be the only company capable of shaking the Google world up: In March 2010, Facebook became the most visited site in the United States, dethroning the great Google.
Facebook is moving towards including in its social network platform more search engine functionality as one of the most important aspect of the site.
So how does the Facebook “Search Engine” Model work?
The facebook search model called “Open Graph.” is still in its infancy but it appears that The Facebook ‘Like’ function is central to that model. It enables external content from outside of Facebook to be included in Facebook search results. It will count how many people ‘Like’ an article or page on a website. So the greater the number of ‘Likes’, the higher the rank, and the more it will be exposed through Facebook search.
For those who know that Google’s search algorithm is heavily based on “link popularity”, the difference with Facebook model would be that it is is based on “Likes.”
Marketers should take this seriously because Facebook’s search share has increased, so take notice. Users are indeed using search throughout the site to the tune of 2.7% of all US searches.
If you use Facebook you must know the AutoComplete box generated after you start a search query.
Here are few parameters that contribute to AutoComplete box rank:
* User’s name,
* Events that user has been invited to,
* Questions with the search term in it,
* A friend of the user with the search term in the name,
* A friend of a friend of the user with the search term in the name,
* Groups that the user has joined,
* Apps used by that user,
* Pages that user has liked,Pages related to that users interests,
* Pages that users friends have liked.
Finally make sure you pay attention To these when creating your facebook pages:
* Keyword density on the page.
* Search term in both page name and description.
Publicize your page to have as many “likes” as possible.Total number of “Likes” helps rankings.

Interesting post Kerry and thanks for sharing. I assumed that Facebook was up to something when they changed the way you access a “Fan” page by clicking the “Like” button. Thought that rather odd at the time but can understand the reason behind it all.
Have not found their search box very helpful. Guess every time I’m searching for something in particular, it give me the most useless information ever. Hopefully that will improve with time as well.
Thanks again Kerry.

What a great story Sally,
Social media websites have revolutionized and changed the world forever. No need to demonstrate the power of Facebook and other similar sites today. The question is how are you’re using them to improve your business or your personal live.
Thanks for your input Sally.
