The secret to successful SEO marketing is finding profitable keywords. However, doing keyword research can be time consuming and boring. But if you follow these three guidelines below, you will be able to uncover moneymaking keywords very easily.
The first thing you need to do before you can do your research is to get a keyword research tool. Probably the best free tool you can start off with is Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool. This tool is used primarily for advertisers to determine the cost to advertise but it shows you exactly what terms people are typing in Google to find stuff.
When doing your keyword research, you should use exact match search instead of broad match search. The exact match option will show the number of people typing in the keyword phrase in that exact order. Broad match is useful to see, in general, how popular the keyword phrase is but it does not mean that people are searching the keyword phrase in that exact order.
Once you have your keyword tool ready to go, ask yourself these questions:
Are there at least 2400 searches per month?
If you have exact match turned on, you’ll find that a phrase that has a few thousand searches a month for broad match may give you just a few hundred in exact match, which could mean very little traffic coming to your site. Many Internet marketing experts recommend at least 2400 searches per month for the possibility of earning at least one sale. However, keep in mind that 2400 searches do not equal 2400 visitors. The actual number of clicks you can get is not certain but many believe that a page ranked number one on Google will get about 50 to 60% of the clicks while it drops off significantly with each rank. Therefore, a page ranked number one for a keyword phrase that gets 2400 searches a month may actually get 1440 visitors or less.
Is the average Cost Per Click (CPC) $1 or more?
You want to have the cost per click for your keyword phrase to be at least $1. This gives you a good idea if people are clicking on the ads that appear in Google search for your keyword phrase. Just remember though, that $1 is the price an advertiser is willing to pay per click and not how much you will be getting per click. If you do contextual advertising like Adsense, you may receive a lot less than $1 but this gives you a good sense on whether or not your visitor will likely click on an ad or not.
Are there many ads on page one of Google?
Go to Google’s main site and do a broad search of your keyword phrase. After you do your search, look at how many Adwords appear on Google’s first page and beyond. If you see only one or two, it could mean that keyword phrase is not very profitable for the advertisers. However, if you see a long list of Adwords ads then you know people are looking to buy and advertisers are profiting from them.
If the answer to all of the questions is yes, then you probably can move forward with your keyword phrase. This is just the beginning. With on-page SEO, backlinking and, of course, great content, you will not only rank at the top of the search engines, you will definitely profit as well.
Talk to you soon,
Alexis

Hi Alexis,
I never thought of checking CPC for any keyword and never checked the ads before selecting the keywords. I think I was really missing the great trick to find out good keywords. But finally I know about them here. Thanks for sharing such important information.

In some cases these Google number are not so reliable. I read about people ranking for high volume KVs and getting very few visitors. WordTracker seems to be a recommended alternative, but haven’t tried it personally….Tomek

Hi Tomek ,
You’re right that those number are not always correct. I always combine at least 2 keyword research tools when I have a serious project. I use Market Samurai and Keyword Blueprint With great results.
Hi Alexis . Thanks for this post – it clarified few things to me. I am still in reading phase and am blogging non-profit but with such a great lessons it will hopefully change soon.
Most other post about keyword research was repeating the same things, but on this one i actually learned something.

You’re welcome Luke,
Thanks for the encouragement.
Actually keyword research is somewhere between an art and a science. While number of searches, CPC and number of ads might take one in the right direction, ultimately it is only by experimenting does one stumble upon golden nuggets.

Exactly Amanda,
All the parameters above point you on the right direction but only testing will allow you to get those “golden nuggets”. That’s also true in marketing in general: Testing testing testing.
I understand the importance of number of searches, CPC value and number of advertisers. This information, as you said, is very useful. My problem is that I am not able to gauge the strength of competition. How does one go about finding out if a particular keyword is “conquerable”?

Hi Cindy,
To measure the competition of a keyword it’s possible to do it manually but I’ll not advise that . It would take too much time to do so.There are great tools out there to give you in a matter of second the seo competition of a keyword. The one I love the most and use every single day is Market Samurai. If you can afford it I think It would be a great investment for you Internet marketing business. There another tool I use called Keyword Blueprint. It’s FREE you can download it from Here.
I hope this helps.
Thanks Alexis for the tips and the article, will have to look on Keyword Blueprint that you mention about. Currently having traffic travis and that’s where I check competition and everything but Google keyword tool data is really unreliable. I always end up in a lot of competition and after a lot of work I see the keyword is not that profitable at all. Going to have to try wordtracker as well.

You’re welcome Mike,
Marketing is about testing ,testing, testing. I would like to know your results with keyword blueprint.
I’m interested in buying a SEO software for my use and I’m quite torn apart between the available options. What I need is a complete solution to handle Ranking tracker (including Google national versions) with history.
