One of the most effective ways of building a list is by partnering with other marketers who have lists of their own. By working together, you can help each other grow your lists as well as help in other ways. The trick is to find those potential partners in the first place.
A lot of people tend to think of the big names in their niche first. Meaning those marketers with the highest profiles in their market.
While those people probably have big lists and would be highly desirable JV partners, it’s unlikely that they’re going to work with you when you’re just getting started. They’re looking for partners who can offer them as much in return as they can give.
When you’re starting out, you’ll probably be a lot more successful by approaching smaller marketers who are actively building their own lists.
Think in terms of one step up the “food chain” from where you are. Let’s say you’ve got around 250 people on your list – you might want to look for people with roughly double that to partner with. Think in terms of the next step in your growth, not where you want to ultimately be.
Where can you find these people? You can look in a number of places:
- Market-related discussion boards
- Clickbank or other marketplaces
- Google
- Lists you’re subscribed to yourself
Forums make excellent resources because they allow you to interact with people before approaching them as potential partners. If you’re an active member of the community, they’ll get to “know” you and will be a lot more likely to agree to a JV deal.
Clickbank, Paydotcom and other such networks are also good resources. You can search for products that are related to your niche, and look for marketers who are building an email list on their website. The fact that they’re building a list makes them a good potential partner for you.
Search engines won’t give you as targeted a list of potential JVs but you can still use them to search for other sites in your market that are building lists. Check the paid ads as well as the natural search results to find potential partners who are already selling things to the market.
Finally, if you’re subscribed to some email lists in your market, every one of those marketers could be a potential JV partner. As already mentioned, don’t try to partner up with the biggest marketer right off the bat, but look for newer marketers who are anxious to keep building their own list.
